Arts, Culture, and Recreation Organizations

Includes organizations and activities in general and specialized fields of culture and recreation. Three sub-groups of organizations are included in this group: (1) culture and arts (i.e., media and communications; visual arts, architecture, ceramic art; performing art; historical, literary and humanistic societies; museums; and zoos and aquariums); (2) sports; and (3) other recreation and social clubs (i.e., service clubs and recreation and social clubs).

Average Annual Donation

The mean amount of money given to charitable and/or nonprofit organizations by donors in a given group in a given region (i.e. Canada, New Brunswick) over the period of one year.

Average Hours Volunteered Annually

The mean number of hours of volunteering contributed to charitable and/or nonprofit organization by volunteers in a given group and a given region (i.e. Canada, British Columbia) over the period of one year.

Bequest

The donation of cash money or other assetts to a given organization or number of organizations upon death of the donor through a will.

Demographics

Population statistics, such as the age, educational attainment, household income, martial status, labour force status, and sex/gender.

Donor Rate

The percentage of a given population that has made donations to charitable and/or nonprofit organizations.

Education and Research Organizations

Includes organizations and activities administering, providing, promoting, conducting, supporting and servicing education and research. Four sub-groups are contained in this group: (1) primary and secondary education organizations; (2) higher education organizations; (3) organizations involved in other education (i.e., adult/continuing education and vocational/technical schools); and (4) organizations involved in research (i.e., medical research, science and technology, and social sciences).

Environment Organizations

Includes organizations promoting and providing services in environmental conservation, pollution control and prevention, environmental education and health, and animal protection. Two sub-groups are included in this category: environment and animal protection.

Financial Donation

Money given directly to one or more charitable and/or nonprofit organization.

Health Organizations

Includes organizations that engage in health-related activities, providing health care, both general and specialized services, administration of health care services, and health support services. Four sub-groups are included in this category: (1) hospitals and rehabilitation; (2) nursing homes; (3) mental health and crisis intervention; and (4) other health services (i.e., public health and wellness education, out-patient health treatment, rehabilitative medical services, and emergency medical services).

In-Kind Donation

Gifts of food or clothing to one or more charitable and/or nonprofit organization.

International Organizations

Includes organizations promoting cultural understanding between peoples of various countries and historical backgrounds and also those providing relief during emergencies and promoting development and welfare abroad

Philanthropy and Voluntarism Organizations

Includes philanthropic organizations and organizations promoting charity and charitable activities including grant-making foundations, voluntarism promotion and support, and fundraising organizations.

Religious Organizations

Organizations promoting religious beliefs and administering religious services and rituals; includes churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, shrines, seminaries, monasteries and similar religious institutions, in addition to related organizations and auxiliaries of such organizations.

Social Services Organizations

Includes organizations and institutions providing human and social services to a community or target population. Three sub-groups are contained in this category: (1) social services (including organizations providing services for children, youth, families, the handicapped and the elderly, and self-help and other personal social services; (2) emergency and relief; and (3) income support and maintenance.

Sports Organizations

Sports organizations are grouped with Arts, culture and recreation organizations.
